KUALA LUMPUR: Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) have finally proved their critics right by admitting direct involvement in partisan politics and street demonstrations against the government.
SMM leader Ahmad Syukri Abdullah who took part in the Free Anwar demonstrations at the Kuala Lumpur High Court complex yesterday, before Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was acquitted from his sodomy charge, said SMM will continue to take part in such rallies and demonstrations in future.
Syukri Abdullah told The Mole: "We were at the demonstration to protest against the dirty politics of Umno and Barisan Nasional.''
"From now on, SMM alongside other student activist will take part in such rallies on a frequent basis.''
Ahmad however said that the issue was not about wanting to free Anwar Ibrahim from being sent to jail but about dirty politics and a clean political system.
"We want the government stop dirty politics and we will continue our fight for a clean political system," he added.
On Dec 29, Ahmad told The Mole that SMM was not aligned to any politician or political party and that the student movement would not be 'anywhere near the Free Anwar demonstrations'.
He said then that SMM would instead be campaign attending fellow student activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim's disciplinary case hearing on the same day at the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim, Perak.
A blog posting at Papa Gomo pointed out that Anwar who then faced a sodomy charge held talks with several student groups at his Segambut residence on October 17.
The blogger claimed that Anwar had sought the students' support for the Free Anwar movement apart from instigating them to demonstrate against the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA).
SMM responded by denying the blog post's assertion and distanced themselves from Anwar and the Opposition.
When contacted, Pemimpin Mahasiswa Aspirasi Malaysia (Aspirasi) president Ahmad Shahar Abdullah said he was upset that the group of students have allowed their minds to be manipulated by the opposition.
"Instead of focusing on their studies and improving their results, they choose to rally for Anwar,'' Ahmad said. The fact that they took part in the demonstration goes to show that have lost interest in their studies," Shahar noted. – Mole.my
