According to the latest reports out of England,Manchester United are set to seal a £22 million deal for Arsenal striker and captain Robin van Persie.
The Red Devils have been much more intentional and outspoken about their chase for Van Persie in recent times—desperate to sign the 29-year-old Dutch international before the start of the 2012-13 English Premier League season.
And according to The Sun, they look set to do just that. Arsenal were last night set to cave in and strike a deal with Manchester United for Robin van Persie. They are ready to start serious talks with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson—hoping to seal a £22 million move before the weekend's Premier League opener.
Van Persie, 29, was jeered by his own fans in Sunday’s win over Cologne in Germany and is now desperate for a move to be completed—United see that as the opening to force through a deal.
Arsenal were demanding £25 million for the Dutch striker, who has just one year left on his contract, but the club will now settle for less—rather than have a player on their books who does not want to be there and could become a hate figure for the fans.
Van Persie netted 30 league goals for Arsenal en route to claiming the Premier League's Golden Boot Award last season—showcasing that he can be one of the most deadly finishers in world football when he isn't troubled by injury and proved himself as the club's top striker.
But after deciding not to renew his contract at the Emirates next season, it seems that he may well leave the London club over the summer transfer window.
Manchester United—should they sign RVP,would have arguably the most fearsome duo in the Premier League, with the Dutchman partnering with England international Wayne Rooney in attack for the Red Devils. They would be strong, dynamic, and one of the favorites to win the English Premier League. You'd argue that they're all of those things now, and rightly so, but the addition of Van Persie would be an incredible addition to the Red Devils' squad.
Vincent Kompany recently stated via ESPN Soccernet that any club would be made stronger with the addition of Van Persie, and it seems that it could well be Manchester United who benefit from the Dutch international this season.
