Zahid wants to discuss defence issues with Opposition

KUALA LUMPUR: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has invited Opposition leaders to meet and discuss defence issues. This, he said, was to ensure that the public would not have negative perceptions on matters related to national defence.

 

"Opposition leaders should provide proof before making accusations. What gave them the impression that the price of our Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) has increased?" he asked.

 

He was referring to allegations by PJ Utara MP Tony Pua that the ships' price has increased several fold since Boustead Naval Shipyard (BNS) was awarded a contract to build six LCS.

 

Zahid said the Opposition should not make assumptions because the LCS project had not been officially awarded to BNS, a company owned by the Malaysian Armed Forces Fund Board.

 

He said the shipyard was given a letter of intent by the ministry to build six LCS but this was different from a letter of offer, adding that the high price was because it would be built in Malaysia.

 

"The price includes value-added offset programmes, transfer of technology. It does not include the price of sub-systems for each LCS," he said after opening the Islamic Dakwah Foundation Malaysia Carnival at Dataran Coliseum, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman yesterday. Bernama
